
A room full of writers writing
Gerald entered the writing deck where many of the other guests were already busy developing his myth. Schlafen Ahab was not visible to the naked eye, but Holger Meins walked up and down and around the tables.
As he searched for an empty seat, Gerald looked over the guests’ shoulders and read fragments of what they were writing:

Pip walked down the alley. He had the feeling that he was being followed. His head flooded with crashing white noise. An Exclamation Point had beaten him over the head. Hoping to escape, Pip stumbled down the alley. Before he got far, an En dash—or maybe it was an Em dash—sideswiped him and stuck Pip in the ribs with a shiv.
Pip fell to the ground, and again, his head flooded with white noise as his head crashed onto the asphalt. A pack of commas bounded out of the trash cans and dumpsters. They sliced through his flesh and spliced it back together again.

The main character, a woman named Fisher, woke up with a hard-boiled, blue-jowled detective hangover. Florescent lights, padded walls, smooth and clear furniture without any nasty corners or points, round windows and flat panel viewscreens, appliances with analog resistive touchscreens—all the proper fixtures of a speculative apartment like in the movies. She looked into the oval mirror, which was circled by a florescent light. She was as bald as Egg Head. Her eyes were red and fleshy; she would need to take some hangover pills, then some breakfast pills, chased down with a cup of coffee.
After taking her pills, she went to the coffee tap (nothing beats real coffee), but when she pushed the graphical button labeled POUR, the lovely, lovely java that came out was decaf. What would she do now? It was early in the day to start with the whiskey-straight pills …
