Throwing my hands up, falling well short of 50,000 word novel writing objective.
In the waning hours of July Novel Writing Month, I was approximately 40,000 words short of the contest objective. In act of desperation, I attempted to make up the difference with another gimmick. At the end of the story, I decided the main character would deliver a long soliloquy. Hamlet's To be or not be soliloquy does not quite reach 300 words. While not nearly as eloquent as Shakespeare, my character's soliloquy exceeded 800 words—still only 2% of the word count gap. Perhaps, I thought, I can make up the difference if the main character developed a stammer, a real significant stammer, so I did. Here is a sample passage:
In in In in In in In in In in In in my my my my im im im im im im im immortal dec dec dec dec declin in e dec dec dec dec declin in e dec dec dec dec declin in e dec dec dec dec declin in e, my my my my mem mem mem memory mi mi mi mi mi mi mi xxxx es im im im im im im ag ag ag ag ag es and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and tho tho tho tho tho thoughts.
Quite incomprehensible, but in Novel Writing Month content is secondary to word count. (Content is why you have Novel Editing month in March.) It matters little at this point, since it still was not enough to reach the 50,000 word objective. While the story does approach novella length, this was July Novel Writing Month, not July Novella Writing Month. I now throw up my hands and admit defeat with 15,950 words.
