"Being that "Slaughterhouse 5" is one of my favorite novels of all time, I can't imagine a movie being better than the book. That said, I thought that the movie adaptation of "Mother Night" was pretty darn good! Based on your recommendation, I'll give the S-5 movie a look." Read more

Novel Writing Update - Flurry of Writing Activity Increases Word Count by 1522 Percent

Posted by: Unpublished Guy on 7/23/2009

As you might have noticed, my word count has been in a bit of a holding mode. It didn't help that my bipolar, RAD, PTSD, ADD, ODD daughter poured coffee into my laptop on Sunday. (My first "Sorry for not posting but PC/laptop was in the shop" blog inactivity excuse.) Despite this setback, I have broken through the three word glass ceiling.

You might not consider me much of a novel writer, since I have never written a novel. My strategy to address this deficiency was starting with a short story that I had already written that I could expand to novel length. According to the JuNoWriMo FAQ, you can use an existing story but only new words count towards the 50,000 word count. Fair enough, so I retyped what I had previously written in my short story. Since I started from a blank page, I think those words I've decided that, although they do happen to be identical to those words that appeared in that other fiction short story—not a novel, mind you—these retranscribed words count as new words as far as my new novel is concerned. Think I am on shaky ground. I don't think so.

My updated word count is now 4,568, only 45,432 more to go with eight days remaining. I only need to average 5679 words per day to reach the 50,000 word objective. As promised, in my last novel writing post, I have added a graph, tracking my progress.
